New record in a recent outbreak of Coronavirus cases in Victoria

Victorian authorities have said they expect Victoria will be in a position to lift COVID-19 restrictions later in the week, in the wake of one new local case being recorded.

Health Minister Martin Foley said the latest case was a primary close contact linked to the Arcare Maidstone aged care outbreak, but was not a resident.

They were quarantining through their infectious period and returned the positive result after their day 13 test, authorities said.

Melbourne's lockdown has officially ended, with no limits on reasons to leave home, but a number of industries remain closed and strict caps on social gatherings remain in place.

Regional Victoria is a step ahead, with slightly looser restrictions than in the city.

"What I will say … my expectation is by later in the week we'll be in a position to announce further easing of restrictions for regional Victoria, and further easing of restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne."

The Acting Premier said while it was positive the new infection had been in quarantine, "we're not over this outbreak yet, we've got to drive it into the ground".

Mr Merlino said officials were reviewing large events like crowds at the AFL, but no announcements were imminent.
